I love the feeling of paper in my hands. I always have and I always will. My wife has begged me to rid our bookshelves of my favorite paper swatch books that I’ve I acquired over the 10+ years I’ve been doing this…but I just can’t do it. Magazines will always have a special place in my heart… Read more…

The introduction of tablets and smartphones have created a need for web-based animation that goes way beyond the capabilities of the old stand-by that is Flash. Because of that, Flash has been experiencing a very long and somewhat painful death, leaving a hole in the web design / development community that’s in the shape of animated web elements. Adobe has responded to this need by creating Adobe Edge. This is how Adobe describes it:
“Adobe® Edge is a new web motion and interaction design tool that allows designers to bring animated content to websites, using web standards like HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3.”
For the past few months, I’ve been playing around with Edge and so far, I really like it. It gives me the option of animating virtually anything I want within a web design while using mobile (and SEO) friendly HTML5. For now Edge is free because it’s still in beta, but it won’t be for long!
Here’s a link to download it. Adobe Edge
Graphic designer, Julien Mercier, created a typeface that combines both serif and san serif font details to create a really interesting and elegant approach to typography. It’s called Otsuki-Sama and you can check it out here.
It’s true. We hate change, we love change and then we hate it again. Who knew that this principle rule could spill into the color of our iPhone? Apple did.
Came across this Slate article outlining Apple’s knack for teasing us with with its small slice of the color wheel. White? Black? Chrome? White again? You love it.
The folks at Mountain View just keep on keeping on. If there’s a theme for Google in 2011, it’s got to be “innovation.” Read more…
When you’re still as excited about the classic Disney Animated Features at 28 as you were when you were a toddler, you tend to want to qualify it. Otherwise, people start to wonder.
The newly opened Franklin Theatre will be showing Mary Poppins this weekend. My favorite. Naturally, I’ve been blasting the soundtrack throughout the office this week while Micah, Julian and Joseph roll their eyes, and sometimes, involuntarily begin singing along.
After about the third time through, Julian turned to Micah and asked a very good question about me: “What’s with this guy?”
Julian was kidding, but it’s a serious and interesting question. Why does the magic of Disney still compel me and other adults I know? Here are a few of my desperate qualifiers in my attempt to justify myself and maybe even you. Read more…
It’s been too hot to bake these days, so we’ve made popsicles instead. If you need a way to cool off this summer, give one (or more) of these a try!
80′s Tang Pops
These remind me of hot September days in California.
6 tablespoons Tang
2 cups water
Mix together until the Tang is dissolved. Pour into popsicle molds and freeze.
Watermelon Popsicles
These were so delicious last summer–before I discovered I’m allergic to watermelon! My kids still love them!
3 cups seedless watermelon
1 cup strawberries
2 tablespoons Sugar
1-2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice
Put all ingredients into the blender and blend well.
Pour into popsicle molds. Freeze.
Yogurt Pops
1 cup vanilla yogurt
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries, strawberries or raspberries
1 tablespoon sugar (to taste, if berries are sour)
Put all ingredients in the blender. Blend.
Pour into popsicle molds. Freeze.
The Franklin Theatre officially kicked off this past weekend with a VIP variety show for local donors followed by an inaugural showing of “Gone With the Wind.” Main street was blocked to cars, packed with happy, sweaty people and made for my most memorable Franklin experience in a long time.
We Franklinites are a lot like Hobbits in Tolkien’s fictional village of Hobbiton. We jump at the chance to come together and celebrate things like beer, wine, produce and many other seasonal holidays, so it wasn’t as if seeing the town come together this time and celebrate in such numbers was a surprise. It just seemed more exciting than usual. Something new in the air. Read more…
It’s hard to believe that the Franklin Rodeo celebrates its 62nd year next weekend. It’s one of the longest-running events in Middle Tennessee — and it’s one of the “old fashioned” traditions that make Franklin so special. Read more…
